Sarah Kate Newsletter
- Fall 2007 Issue
Welcome
to the fall edition of Sarah Kate, style bites and other
miscellaneous fluff for practical women like myself who
will be happy to see skinny jeans finally hit the skids.
Vera
Wang + Kohls = ?
OK,
so I checked out the new “Simply Vera Wang” collection
at Kohl’s, which has received considerable editorial
coverage in most every print and online consumer and
business magazine. Frankly, I’m a little baffled. When I
“Shop by Look” online, I do see a few pieces I’d wear in
my daily life, but when I went to the store, it just
looked like a bunch of dark, rumpled clothes hanging in
a small kiosk. I actually thought Kohl’s “apt. 9”
collection was more appealing, but what do I know? Maybe
I caught my local Kohl’s on a bad stocking day or worse
… dark, drab and scrunched-up are fall’s new staple
items.
At Right: Solid pinch-pocket cardigan from the Simply
Vera Wang line at Kohl’s.
Who Doesn’t Have a Blog?
Having a Web site used to be the “in” thing. Apparently,
that’s so yesterday with the proliferation of blogs. And
they’re remarkably easy to create. My friend Emily and I
whipped up our own blogs in 15 minutes (no joke) at
www.blogster.com
and www.blogspot.com.
And we’re technophobes! Just in case you haven’t jumped
on the blogwagon, here’s a small dose of what’s going
down in technoville:

The
Decade of Zero Definition
If there’s ever been a time in fashion history that
doesn’t have a theme, this is it. It’s easy to
remember the unique style themes of, say, the ’40s,
’50, ’60s ’70s and ’80s, but, really, what do the
’00s have to offer in the “unique” category? Isn’t
it just a melting pot of all previous decades’
styles? Perhaps that is the theme we’ll fondly look
back on in the ’10s. In the meantime, I’m willing to
go out on a limb and coin a theme for our current
decade. I’m thinking fatigue. Fatigue fits in well
with our current state of international affairs and
the tired designs revolving throughout malls across
America. It even fits in with the ubiquitous
fatigue-inspired men’s, women’s and children’s
apparel over the last seven years. On a more
positive note (especially for parents of teen
beats), this fatigue theme is far more soothing than
sex, drugs and rock & roll and edgier than June
Cleaver, but if you have a better theme, I’m all
ears. |
Tried
and True
Once in a blue moon, you find a great pair of jeans you
want to share with your girlfriends. No, I’m not talking
about the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book, but
real denim. My find was a pair of
Lindsay Modern Five-Pocket Jeans at Ann Taylor,
which aren’t super low or super high-waisted, just below
the belly button. Plus, they are boot cut (I can’t bring
myself to going skinny or straight) and made with a
heavier-weight denim, which holds my saddlebags in a
straighter line. Ann Taylor also has a new
trouser jean that looks good in pictures (see
below).
I’m currently tapping the brake on any further jeans
spending, so if you happen to try and buy AT’s denim
trousers, fill me in.
My New
Best Friend Craig
My neighbor turned me onto
Craigslist.com
and for that, my husband and I are $3,400 richer. The
free online classified ad service was a goldmine in
terms of connecting us with buyers for our used car. It
was seriously only a matter of 60 minutes before phone
calls came in from our free ad. Twenty-four hours later,
we had cash (literally) in hand for the car. I was,
however, not so lucky, in the sale of our dining room
table on the site. I’m guessing a cherry dining set is
not a hot commodity, as many Americans—me included—don’t
cook dining-room worthy meals. Our family huddles around
a kitchen island with bowls of mac & cheese while we
stare at the dust collector in the next room. How did I
get off on that tangent? At any rate, based on Craig’s
ease of use and $0 price tag, I highly recommend him,
especially if you’re looking to offload a vehicle.
Need
Baubles?
From now until Dec. 26, 10 percent of the sale of every
piece of jewelry at
www.sarah-kate.com will be donated to the
National Eating Disorders Association. It’s easy
shopping for teacher/galpal/family holiday gifts,
shipping’s free, and you’re helping those who suffer
from eating disorders around the globe. Win-win-win! |

SimplyHired.com
At one time or another, we’ve all become disenchanted
with our jobs and scoured the online job sites. Making
searches faster and easier,
SimplyHired.com
is a one-stop-job-shop (especially nice if you’re being
naughty and searching on company time). It’s a search
engine with a colossal online database of jobs. For
instance, if you’re doing a search for writing jobs, it
picks up jobs from actual company sites like Nordstrom’s
(there’s a killer catalog copywriter job available in
Washington state), Macy’s, US Airways and Target, as
well as predictable recruiter sites. You can even do
“special searches” for jobs with companies that are dog
friendly, mom friendly, age-50+ friendly, eco friendly
and even sexual-orientation friendly. It’s a whole new
job-search world out there whenever disenchantment
strikes or the re-org rumor hits your cube.
