It’s the Q2 edition of Sarah Kate, style bites for
practical fashionistas who know a spring thing when they
see it.
Speaking of spring, a friend of mine recently tuned me
into
Bobbi Brown's new "beach" fragrance, which actually
does smell better than Coppertone. Test it out at the
cosmetic counter and give yourself a shot of summer this
spring.
Bag, Borrow or Steal … Bling?
It’s true. The popular purse swap site,
www.bagborroworsteal.com, will soon be offering
high-end jewelry on its site. That means you can borrow
the latest Luella bag plus a Judith Ripka bauble for a
monthly fee. When you’re done gallivanting around town
with your wares, pop them in a return envelope for your
next dose of luxury. It’s a bit like Cinderella, except
you can beat the clock.
Glow, but not in the Dark
For
$6 and some change, you can get a healthy glow (think
sun-kissed, not scary spray-on bronze) and moisturize
overnight. No kidding. Jergens’ Natural Glow product has
made its way onto the pages of InStyle, O, Shop Etc.,
Cosmo Girl, Allure and Marie Claire with rave reviews. I
put this modern miracle to my own road test, and it
passed with almost flying colors. I’ve been waking up to
a little color this past winter and my palms aren’t
orangutan orange. The “almost” comes in because I’m not
a fan of the lotion’s heavy perfume-y scent. Hopefully Jergens’ has received enough complaints to produce an
unscented version so we can all enjoy our tans without
overpowering the nasal passages.
This
just in … As I was putting the finishing touches on this
blurb, I saw an ad for Jergens’ new “Natural Glow”
version for faces only. For six extra dollars, I’ll give
it a whirl.

Coming Soon! Life Without Ed
For anyone who’s ever suffered from an eating disorder
(a.k.a. Ed), you know he’s nothing more than a ball and
chain. Divorce is seriously the only option. Jenni
Schaefer, author of
Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence
from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too, has
teamed up with me to create a sterling silver charm
inscribed with the words “Life Without Ed™.” The charm,
which includes a freshwater pearl to signify the wisdom,
“You do better when you know better,” was created to
raise awareness, hope and support surrounding eating
disorders. An accompanying sterling silver necklace and
bracelet are also available.
Ten percent of the sale of each Life Without Ed™ charm
and Life Without Ed™ bracelet and necklace will be
donated to the Seattle-based
National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). NEDA
is the largest not-for-profit organization in the United
States working to prevent eating disorders and provide
treatment referrals to those suffering from eating
disorders. NEDA offers a toll-free information and
referral helpline at (800) 931-2237.
All Life Without Ed™ jewelry will soon be available at
www.sarah-kate.com
and
www.jennischaefer.com.
Spring Things
While fall 2006 fashion was strutting down NYC runways
this past February, I was far more concerned about
spring fashion for my family in the suburbs of Chicago.
I use the term “fashion” loosely when talking about my
brood. We’re mainstream junkies. You’ll find a bag or
two from the Gap, Old Navy or Target in our home most
always, but you’ll never find a MaxMara, Chanel or
Burberry bag for the simple fact that the family budget
can stretch only so far. No matter. Spring fashion is
usually a breath of fresh air regardless the store
you’re stepping into. Based on humble observation, white
is red hot, white eyelet is even hotter, and oversized
belts, bags and chunked up shoes offset the feminine
drama. This spring, Ralph Lauren Americana smacks right
into high-heeled Michael Kors while Target knocks off
the whole bunch.
A Case for Dogs Larger Than Cats
My
two little ones and I visited our local Petland several
times this past winter. It beats the zoo when it’s 12 F,
and we get a chance to pet the little puppies and give
them back. No poops enter my house, and life is good. On
our last visit, I fell in love with a one-pound
Chihuahua. I don’t even like the Paris Hilton/Taco Bell
dogs, but I almost shelled out $1,440 for this tiny,
bat-like creature who shook until I covered him up in my
coat. A few nights later at book club with the girls, I
came to find out that these little dogs’ bones are so
fragile that one pounce from a kindergartner could
squash them like a bug. So, my point in this paragraph
is to remind myself that no matter how cute the little
teeny dogs are, they can’t be left for long weekends
with a cat litter box, their little toothpicks won’t
hold up under an accidental run-in with a flip flop, and
we already have a much bigger cat.

DontDateHimGirl.com
Oh how I wish this Web site was available in my 20s.
DontDateHimGirl.com is a site for women to post the
photo, city and state of a cheating boyfriend or
husband, as well as a description of what happened. You
can search offenders by name, city, state and other
keywords. I would imagine some defamation-of-character
lawsuits might spring up from the launch of this site,
but nonetheless, it makes for great reading. I do see a
marketing opportunity here for an enterprising gentleman
to launch DontDateHerDude.com. I’ll keep you posted.

Half Dozen More Sites to See …

Stylebakery.com’s
online answer to Lucky and Shop Etc.’s

and style.

New York Times’ “Fashion & Style” headlines is well
worth a click.
www.budgetfashionista.com - The author of this site
is a perennial shopper minus the trust fund.
www.ravinstyle.com
- This site centers around three characters Ravin,
Jackie and Lela. Each fashionista has her own unique

interesting shopping concept with an emphasis on
emerging designers.
