Sarah Kate Newsletter
Fall 2006
It’s
the fall edition of Sarah Kate, the e-newsletter for
practical fashionistas who are finding it difficult to
accept the return of ’80s fashion.
Black is Back
Lately,
I’m not sure if I’m stepping into the Black Sea or a
clothing store. It’s quite apparent that black is the
“it” color this fall, which probably has its roots in
the state of world matters. Black is a great color, but
when I see whole stores filled with it, I can’t help but
think funeral, not fashion. The good news is that I’ll
probably save a lot of money this season as I clamor for
the return of color and the premature death of skinny
jeans and leggings. For those whose
Color-Me-Beautiful charts pop up “winter,” though,
this fashion season is a dream come true.
Gold is Bold, and Yellow
The platinum industry may not be thrilled about the
return of yellow and rose gold, but word is that the
warmer-toned metals are coming back strong in all
jewelry categories: earrings, watches, necklaces,
bracelets, cuff links, whatever. Chunky gold links are
still taking up prime real estate in retailers’ display
cases while rose gold is a watchmaker’s choice for the
watchcase. These latest gelded gems give me hope that
the black fashion palette will soon take a back seat to
earthier browns, greens and oranges.
All You Need is a Box of
Crayons
On
a recent Saturday, I headed off to a
SPA Sisters
retreat with some buds in downtown Geneva, Ill. This was
no typical spa day with seaweed wraps and herbal teas.
Not even close. Instead, I was handed a box of crayons
and a journal upon arrival. As stated in the SPA
Sisters’ brochure, the daylong “Awakening Retreat” is
designed to “nurture women’s spirits and bring them back
to a connection with nature, authentic self and other
women through teaching, creative exercises, experience
in nature and sharing.” It seriously was all that and
more. Doodling by the Fox River and sharing my doodles
and thoughts with seven other women opened up a
surprising number of doors to self-discovery. Our
facilitator, Nancy Barrett Chickerneo, Ph.D., a close
friend of fashion designer Eileen Fisher, was a dream.
She’s the kind of person whose insides truly match her
outsides, and is honest about her journey getting to
that point. Fisher, who is a strong supporter of SPA
Sisters, donates all of the class journals and provides
funding for any woman who can’t meet the expense of the
retreat. It’s a great day to spend with your
girlfriends, plus the memories from the experience last
a lot longer than a French manicure.
Bling Blog
Sarah-Kate.com
is growing up online. On Aug. 25, Sarah-Kate.com’s
Life Without Ed™ jewelry line,
supporting the awareness of eating disorders and
benefiting the
National Eating Disorders Association, landed in a
hip jewelry blog, appropriately named
Bling Blog. Produced by the owner of the jewelry
company Square J Designs, Bling Blog reads like
DailyCandy.com,
only with a bit more bite and targets jewelry hounds.
All Life Without Ed™ jewelry is available at
www.sarah-kate.com
and
www.jennischaefer.com.
Speaking of Blogs …
Blogs are spreading like wildfire in every fashion
category, so it’s no wonder that someone has compiled a
blog directory just for fashionistas. If you’re up for
hordes of fashion speak from people who actually buy and
wear the stuff,
